Traditional positional coordinates in numeral form can be challenging to remember and easily mixed up when entered into mapping systems, causing confusion and delays in exactly the moments when accuracy matters most.

The ACS Solution

The what3words ATAK plugin brings what3words location sharing directly into ATAK. what3words divides the globe into 3m x 3m grids, assigning each a unique set of three memorable words. All calculations use publicly available APIs from what3words or the offline library, making it fully accessible in disconnected environments.

Entering Coordinates via what3words

The what3words ATAK plugin adds the w3w tab to the Coordinate Entry panel, allowing the user to enter the coordinates for any map item using a what3words address.

My Location

By default, ATAK displays your location in the selected coordinate system. The plugin also displays your location in what3words format for easy reference and communication.

Map Item Location

When selecting any item on the map, the plugin displays that item’s what3words location alongside the standard coordinate system, making it easy to communicate precise positions to anyone in the field.
