ACS has been developing ATAK plugins professionally since the early days of the TAK ecosystem — for DoD programs, law enforcement, and commercial operators. This course is built from that operational experience, not from documentation. Every exercise reflects real-world plugin requirements your team will actually encounter.

The 3-day program is hands-on by design. Students work through practical exercises that build directly on each other — from setting up the Android development environment through building and deploying a functional ATAK plugin. We send a qualified ACS trainer directly to your facility, so your team trains in their own environment on their own hardware.

What You’ll Build

Three days. A working plugin.

Each day builds on the last. Students leave with a functional ATAK plugin and the skills to build the next one independently.

Day 1

Foundations

Android development environment setup, ATAK SDK installation and configuration, plugin project structure, and your first working plugin skeleton deployed to a device.

Day 2

Integration

CoT message creation and processing, map overlays, marker management, UI components within ATAK, and integrating external data sources into the common operating picture.

Day 3

Deployment

Mission package creation and distribution, plugin signing, TAK Server integration, testing workflows, and capstone project — each student delivers a functional plugin from scratch.

Sequential systemd startup scripts for GOTS TAK Server to reduce CPU overload and align with modern Linux service management standards.

Background

The Problem with Legacy TAK Server Startup

The latest release of the GOTS TAK Server, version 5.1, retains legacy init.d scripts. Starting from version 5.0, the startup scripts were modularized into individual services, which alleviates server overload during startup.

In earlier iterations of the GOTS TAK Server, the startup process relied on a monolithic script that initiated all services simultaneously. This approach posed challenges by overwhelming CPUs as multiple TAK Server services competed for processing resources. Our team developed these scripts to mitigate such issues, enabling deployment on smaller virtual machines and EC2 instances.

The Solution

Sequential systemd Scripts for TAK Server

Our newly introduced systemd scripts, accessible on GitHub, prioritize sequential service startup to reduce CPU load during initialization and align the scripts with current systemd standards. Extensive testing has been conducted on Amazon Linux 2023, CentOS 7, and RedHat 8 platforms to ensure compatibility and reliability.

Adeptus Cyber Solutions’ TAK2ESRI solution serves as a crucial link between the TAK ecosystem and ESRI, providing seamless integration and visualization of location data inside ESRI. This solution is particularly valuable for law enforcement, first responders, government, and defense applications where real-time location information is critical for decision-making.

TAK2ESRI connects to a TAK Server and listens for position updates sent out by TAK EUDs, converts those location updates, and posts them into an ESRI feature service. Once the data is in the ESRI feature service, it can be consumed and visualized however the user chooses.
